Researching early history of Sheffield United Harriers

Recommended Posts

I am researching the early history of Sheffield United Harriers 1894 to c1930.

I am also in contact with someone researching the later history. I have some photos, newspaper reports etc but any further info would be most welcome.

Will happily share any info with anyone who has athletic ancestors.

I have already used Sheffield local studies library.

Some basic info is on my websites includung a large surname index to Sheffield sports reports c1905-1914

Thanks for any help. Glenn Piper

Spotted your posting and seen various other places.

I'm interested in finding out about my G/Grandfather who ran (and won a number of prizes) sprints in early 1900s.

His name was Horatio Greaves. Do you have any references on him?

The Hallam Chase, does it still take place? Perhaps a sub-set of your enquiry as I seem to remember SUH competitors 'cleaning-up' in the event?

The Hallam Chase still takes place. The anual event takes place in late May .

[The only reference i have found in my indexes to a Greaves is in an athletics programme

Belle Vue,Manchester 23rd Aug 1924 Greaves A SUH One mile walk handicap

Will keep an eye out for Horatio! It is certainly a name that sticks in the mind. One day I will get round to publishing a book and putting more info on my SUH website.

thanks Glenn

Back in the late 1950's I remember a runner called "Jack Fairchild" he used to train in Concord park..I can still see him now in my mind "with blond hair and a brown track suit"...He inspired me to do some cross country running myself but but I wasn't any good at it...I believe he was in the SUH...Anyone remember him????.
