Some other players we have been linked with.

With Neil Warnock intent on bringing in new faces on the eve of the transfer window, Vital football assesses the potential arrivals to Bramall Lane.

Greg Halford, defender, Colchester

Warnock may have signed more defenders than was necessary during the close season but the capture of Halford would represent something of a coup for the Blades. Tracked by West Ham, amongst others, the 22-year-old right sided player starred in Colchester`s promotion to the Championship last season. Versatile, the 6`4 Halford is capable of making a nuisance of himself in either penalty area and scored 8 times for Colchester last season. With Warnock still undecided with regards to his preferred line-up on United`s right, he may see Halford as the answer.

Jobi McAnuff, midfielder, Crystal Palace

The promising right winger was linked with United in the Summer with a £1.5m move. McAnuff first shot to prominence at MK Dons but a move to West Ham didn`t work out and he was subsequently sold to Cardiff. After an impressive first season in Wales, McAnuff was snapped up by Palace and chipped in with eight goals last season as the Eagles missed out on a return to the Premiership. United would certainly benefit from more pace down the flanks but would McAnuff be prepared to swap Palace`s promotion assault for a relegation dogfight?

Theo Walcott, midfielder, Arsenal

Unlikely but stranger things have happened. The gifted teenager, whose inclusion in England`s World Cup squad symbolised Sven Goran Erikkson`s muddled reign, has barely had a kick for both club and country since his big money switch from Southampton. However, though young Theo has much to prove, Arsene Wenger hardly chucks away 12 million pounds with reckless abandon. Walcott is undoubtedly a star of the future who would surely benefit from games in the top flight. The youngster was linked with a loan move to West Brom in the Summer so perhaps Warnock could test Arsenal`s resolve by making a similar move for the pacy left sided forward? The United manager may have his work cut out though as Walcott has figured in both of Arsenal`s Premiership games this season from the bench.

David Nugent, striker, Preston

Watched by several Premiership clubs, including Everton and Middlesbrough, Nugent somehow remains at Deepdale…. for now. New manager Paul Simpson has insisted that his prized asset is going nowhere, but as United have discovered from their capture of former North End lynchpin Claude Davis, Preston are prepared to do business if the right offer comes along.

However, is Nugent the right man for United at a probable cost of 4 million pounds? The jury`s out. Reportedly off colour thus far in this campaign, and having only registered 11 goals last term, suggests that Nugent is hardly the prolific marksman United require to beat the drop. Prior to that Nugent looked every inch a top-flight striker when he netted 21 goals the season before after joining Preston for a bargain £90,000 from Bury. Nugent`s qualities are intelligence and an eye for goal, rather than pace and power. As United`s early problems centre on being able to create chances from midfield, perhaps Warnock would be ill advised to blow his remaining transfer budget on another forward, particularly when he lavished a combined 3 million pounds on Geoff Horsefield and Ade Akinbiyi.

Inigo Idiakez, midfielder, Derby

Considered too good for the Championship, even at the advanced age of 33 Idiakez could do a job in the Premiership. United`s squad lacks players who are capable of "hurting the opposition" - an issue Idiakez could solve. Comfortable on the ball, the Spaniard is capable of unlocking defences by playing a killer pass and has proved to be a big hit at Pride Park. The former Real Sociedad man, who looked at home in La Liga, is likely to harbour one final urge to play at the highest level should United come calling.

Olivier Bernard, defender, Glasgow Rangers

Deemed surplus to requirements by the Scottish giants, Bernard seemed to be heading to Sheffield after being invited to take part in United`s pre-season tour of Scotland. Yet after promising the Frenchman a speedy decision, Warnock still appears to be dragging his feet one month on. Left sided players who have proven to be reliable Premiership operators are in short supply, and for that reason alone Bernard remains an attractive proposition with no transfer fee likely to be involved. If Bernard could recapture the form he showed at Newcastle, the Blades could have themselves a bargain. David Unsworth and Chris Armstrong`s struggle to adapt to the demands of the Premiership thus far may finally force Warnock`s hand, if Bernard is willing to fit into United`s tight wage structure.

Ian Harte, defender, Levante

Though Harte is said to be settled in Spain and relishing little-known Levante`s return to the Spanish top flight up against the likes of Beckham and Ronaldinho, the Republic of Ireland international would surely consider returning to Yorkshire. The former Leeds man`s cultured left foot and deadly free-kicks would add some much needed quality to United`s left side. If the form of Unsworth and Armstrong fails to improve and a move for Olivier Bernard continues to stall, Warnock may turn his attentions to Harte.

Liam Miller, midfielder, Leeds

Warnock is a known admirer of Miller and was said to be contemplating a Summer swoop for the former Celtic player. Miller has struggled to live up to expectations following his move from Glasgow to Man Utd and his opportunities at Old Trafford would appear to be limited. Loaned out to Leeds last season, Miller caught the eye with an accomplished display against the Blades at Bramall Lane. With United struggling to make constructive use of the ball when in possession Warnock could gamble on Miller fulfilling his undoubted promise.

Jason Euell, midfielder / forward, Charlton

History tells you that the teams who are capable of scoring goals stand a far better chance of avoiding relegation. Michael Tonge could chip in with a few but currently United`s midfield is more focused on industry than attack. This has to be addressed urgently. Having criminally failed to make a move for Wigan`s Damian Francis who was eventually snapped up by Watford, a goalscoring midfielder should be at the top of Warnock`s shopping list. Charlton`s Jason Euell could be the man to fill this void.

The Jamaican international surprisingly rarely played for Charlton last season and is yet to feature at the Valley under new manager Iain Dowie either. However, with a decade of top flight experience and a proven eye for goal, either arriving from central midfield or upfront, the 29-year-old Euell is surely more than capable of doing a job. Likely to be available for a fee of 2 million, Euell could be a bargain and score the goals to keep Sheffield United up.

I do not see many names that get me excited

A definite no to Harte who is past his sell by date.

If Oliver Bernard was released by Rangers, he is not rated good enough in that Mickey Mouse league, why ours.

Jason Euwell from Charlton sounds OK but the big question as to be why as he not played for them recently they do not have that good a squad.

David Nugent would be a reasonable addition.

The Blades need a midfield player who keeps the ball.

Greg Halford is wanted by the Blades ahead of Thursday's transfer deadline

The versatile England under-20 international said recently that he wanted to leave Colchester, although boss Geraint Williams is keen to keep him at Layer Road.

Sheffield United boss Neil Warnock wants to add to his squad before the closure of the transfer window and is eyeing both Halford and Rangers full-back Olivier Bernard.

Ade Akinbiyi is being linked with a deadline day move to Vicarage Road

I cannot believe Warnock would sell to one of our main rivals,I f he does go it will be to a champioship side, Birmingham or Palace are showing an interest.Kilbane is up for sale at Everton.

Suits me. Watford buy him, score less. We get a new striker, score more.
