Falls
Hi, They used to call an estate car a shooting brake if you give your memory a shake. My maternal grandmother, who was an Irish catholic (southern) died in the home about 1947. I can remember being taken to see her in there. Hi, "Shooting Brake", now that's a name from the past I had completely forgotten. Thanks for reminding me. Where I grew up, the business had one which they just called "The brake". This was built on a SS Jaguar chassis and would go like the clappers. Never got to drive it, though I had some hair-raising rides in it. Siren
The original St Elisabeths was on a triangular piece of land bound by Queens Rd,Duchess Rd and Farm Rd. The building itself was almost on the exact spot as the old Heartbeat night club. Its on the 1892 to 1914 25 inch OS map.

broncolives
As a 16year old apprentice plumber I worked for Thomas Wilkinson. We did a big renovation job at St Elizabeths (known as the little sisters of the poor) I almost burned the place down when the safety valve on my petrol blowlamp sent a stream of petrol around the room and set on fire. happy Days. I think it was the convent that was on Heeley Bank Road which I remember as a large red brick building with railings around the perimeter.
broncolives
The building was split into three areas. The area nearest the bottm of the road was for elderly men. The top area of the building was for the elderly women and in the middle was the convent. In effect it was an old peoples home. The sisters cared for the reidents and they were well looked after from what I saw. The sisieter used to get funds by having a flag day once a year in town. They would sell small paper lapel badges which had the picture of a horse drawn carriage on them. The only down side i observed was the fact that the building always smelled of boiled cabbage.
