Eat your heart out Jamie Oliver.

In these days of child obesity and Jamie Oliver crusades, I got to thinking about the school-dinners that I experienced during the 40's at Pyebank and and other educational establishments.

I would've asked on the Pyebank thread, but it's got quite political on there of late.

So to the menu. I can remember it cost 2/-a week for school-dinners. I remember we got something different each day. Monday, we got a stew, with meat and vegetables in it, especially carrots. Tuesday, we got a round of beef (cold), with mashed potato and sprouts. On Wednesday we got fishcakes, with mashed potato and a white sauce with parsley in it.

The desserts were, Plums and Custard, a piece of plain spongecake, topped with jam or golden syrup, rice pudding with a glob of jam, which everybody stirred around so the rice went purple.

Cant think of anymore. Anybody remember what we got on the other two days? Oh, the fat on the round of cold beef always had a hint of yellow to it. Loved the fishcakes.
