Claret
I've never been taken in by the Richard Smith hype. Me neither. Only been to Thyme Cafe and Canteen but neither could cook a rare steak. Jesus. How hard is it to cook a rare steak? Heat the griddle pan. 1 - 1.5 mins each side. Done.
chinaski
No one will ever fall over in raptures over Smiths establishments, but what he does well is run restaurants. They're always well managed by trained staff. It's clear because they stand out so much from most other Sheffield eateries. I've been to Artisan once and it was pretty good. Some of the food was horribly confused, but they had some unusual items on the menu (for Sheffield) that I appreciated. We'd booked for Catch yet it was full so went to Artisan. They gave us free drinks for an hour before seating us due to their mistake. Sheffield is a bit of a barren waste land when it comes to eating out, especially if you want good English/ French food. R. Smith is not doing a bad job and I wouldn't criticise him too heavily just because he has little competition. That's not his fault.
