Good pub recommendations in Woodseats

We're looking forward to moving to Woodseats in the New Year and want to know if there are any decent pubs in the area. As a guide to what we call decent, we used to drink at the Cobden View in Crookes - so a 'pub' pub, pref with good ale.

Cheers!

Yeah the pubs are not too clever in Woodseats. Your safest bets are prob Whetherspoons although it's still not brill! The Sheaf View futher down Heeley Bottom sells decent ales or so I've heard and the Rising Sun on Abbey Lane which is a few miles away is also quite nice too. Hope this helps!

I am a resident of woodseats and I have lived here for around 15 years. One of woodseats' assets is its collection of pubs, I disagree with people who have dismissed them all above.

1) The Abbey

is ok. Recently I have found it to be much improved. The previous Management were a little chavvy and the place went sharply downhill, but now it is just fine, normally my favourite boozer. In the summer the excellent ouside facilities often see a hundred people spread out in the warm evening. Quiz night on tuesday and thursday, and the second oldest bowling green in sheffield.

2) The big tree.

This pub has a rowdy reputation, but if you are under 20 or if you are a person who will be forever a teenager then you might like it. In the warm afternoons the front of the place has people quietly relaxing in the sun and it is friendly. But not classy. The landlady is down to earth, and they play pop music at night and it is often 8 deep at the bar. But there you are take it or leave it. Think Kavos or Magalluf and you are in the right ball park.

3) The woodseats

is a music oriented pub, they have regular live bands and karaoke, but it is smallish and very loud. I think they have quite a strict door policy to prevent trouble Over21? not sure. I don't go in much but to me it looks to me to have a bit of a music club feel to it.

4) The Chantrey

is a good old traditional local. The landlord "Mick" is a lovely old bloke and has been in charge here for about 25 years. I like this pub it is full of locals, and I often finish up talking to several neighbours in there. At the weekend, you can always get served and they have a club turn during the week. On mondays there is often a man and a dog, but it is livelier at the end of the week and busy at weekends. This pub often has lots of older folks in, but everyone is made welcome, the staff really appreciate old fashined good manners, and I find them extremely courteus and friendly.

5) Woodseats Palace

This is a busy Weatherspoons. It has an enormous bar in its large main room. An excellent place for meeting up with a large crowd, and we normally have "Unofficial Sheffield Forum woodseats meets" at this venue as it is superb for this purpose. It is so large that you can always get a seat, and is open very late on most days. They do breakfasts and meals, and there is always a large selection of drinks.

If you are meeting with four to six people in a mixed group, you can have a lovely evening around one one of the fixed tables in the "Boothes" at the back.

To give you an idea how large this pub is, it takes its name from the previous building on the site which was a cinema with 800 seats. My suggestion is don't turn up at 9pm here because it gets so busy serving can be slow. After the rush at 9.30pm things run much smoother. *

6) Walking distance..

Within easy reach of woodseats is Heeley Bottom, Norton Lees and Millhouses.

Where there is a further selection of good pubs.

In particular The Prince of wales at Norton lees( 2 mins walk up the hill from the chantrey), The White Lion(listed status), Crown, and The Sheaf View(local and cask specialist pub loved by Camra) At Heeley Bottom, and The Millhouses and Robin Hood at Millhouses.

*An old Auzzy mate of mine used to take the pee out of us going out at 9pm. "here come the poms, it's 9pm" he used to shout. He was already half way to heaven himself by then!

A friend and I lived in Woodseats for about 18 months. we tried most of the pubs in the area, but we always ended up back at the Abbey as it is probably the friendliest of all of them, and has a good selection of beers. We only ever went in the Big Tree twice and a fight kicked off both times so we avoided it from then on. The Woodseats is quite good on the weekends, very lively and regular live bands. The Chantry is more of an old man's locals pub so we never really went in there. The Woodseats Palace is a good place to go for a meal and a drink but it's a Wetherspoons so they don't play music at all.

If I had to pick one over the others I would say the Abbey.
