Are most Stereotypes GENERALLY True?

Recommended Posts

Generalisations can be accurate can't they. But when they are stereotypes they often include a critical connotation which is about prejudice and not generally accepted states in the (actual world). Rather than the projections and distortions of biased thinking.
True and like generalisations stereotypes can also be accurate. A stereotype is a generalisation, it may be born of prejudice but if you accept that generalising can be accurate then by extention so can a stereotype. But as I said earlier you can only stereotype groups of people and even then its just laziness to do so. You can't stereotype an individual, thats just absurd

Your logic is a fallacy old chap. A "generalisation" is just that, a general none specific description. Such as "most swans are white"

A "stereotype" is a biased perception usually based on individual prejudice, and is therefore by definition not accurate or generally true.

"Swans are the most ugly bird around" You may believe it to be true, it doesn't mean it is, it means you believe it to be. And "generally" speaking most people would not agree as the swan posses characteristics "generally" held to be beautiful.

Swans are generally thought beautiful is a generalisation which happens to be true. As it is consistent with the facts of reality.
