Very sad news. He was the first person to interview me live (a long time ago) and he always said hello whenever he saw me (although I wasn't convinced he could remember who I was !)

 

He was a very witty man, and a very professional broadcaster with everything he did, be it radio or TV. And he was enormously funny live both as a comedian/ musician and an after dinner speaker.

 

His downfall was drink, and seems to have been throughout his career, right back to the late 70s - which probably now explains his departure from Radio Sheffield.

 

He will be fondly remembered by many. RIP.

And to think that at the time he left Radio Sheffield, he was considered good enough for "Last of the summer wine", but not for local radio. He was the embodiment of all that is attractive about the South Yorkshire sense of humour and will be sadly missed
