sweetdexter
Re-reading the thread 'Old Cinemas of Sheffield ' A reference was made to Anna Leonowens and the Musical based on her time in Siam,'The King and I'. I was recently in Halifax Nova Scotia and I learned that Anna Leonowens was instrumental in starting the Victoria School of Art and Design. This school has three strong Sheffield connections Two of its most influential Principals where ,Authur Lismer (a cultural icon here in Canada,he being one of the Group of Seven) and Elizabeth S Nutt. She was principal from1916 -1943 and changed the name to Nova Scotia College of Art,which was the fore runner of the present Nova Scotia College of Art and Design. Stanley Royle also taught there1931-
