House removal advice/recommendations - no quotes/advertising

I got quotes from about 10 different companies last week to do our house move.

The quotes for a 7.5 ton lorry + 2 men came in between £360 - £980 fixed price or £42-£84 per hour, there was a huge variation in price, however some companies looked more professional than others!

We decided to go with Specialised Movers in the end because they were recommended by a friend, but Mach1 would have been our second choice.

They probably do a good job, but you have to bear in mind, that without someone coming to quote your job you can easily regret the choosing the cheaper rate, as the cost and your blood pressure rise considerably when they turn up with a van that is too small for your particular job and they're on their fifth trip it's going dark, your missus isn't talking to you and they've lost the kettle.

This is definitely an issue. Generally the cheaper rates will be for smaller vans that may have to make 3,4 or 5 trips. Not an option if you need to be out by 1pm as is usually the case. Ask if the company has a lorry and how many staff. Also, check the insurance situation and ask for proof. You can buy anything cheaply but it's often not the best option.

Very true 'Soldier boy' unfortunately when times are tough anyone can buy a small van and instantly they are 'removal men' it all depends on how much you value your furniture and personal items and what your budget is.

Always check forum reviews, always check they are insured, always check the size of vehicle.

Also little things like if they have a landline/free phone number NOT just a mobile.

If you have there address ?

Do they have a VOSA operators licence? ( if not and there running a. HGV it could be seized with all your items on board)

Think how that would get the blood pressure up.....

Hope this helps

Steve is right as usual.

If you've anything over a two bed hour and have a normal amount of furniture you need to be looking at a company with at least 7.5 tonne trucks.

For the layman think the size of the vans that deliver bread (Warburtons)

This gives the customer many advantages.

To run 7·5 tonne truck you have an operator s license.

To get an operators licence, you have to.

1, Be of good repute.

2,Pass an exam on road transport management.

3,Prove you have sufficient loot to maintain your trucks and business.

4, Have your vehicles regularly maintained.

5,Have an address where you operate from.(ie you can,t hide)

Not a perfect system but helps cut out some but not all of the cowboys.

The are also under the watchful eye of VOSA.

VOSA along with the Vat man, my Missus and Mossad are high on my list of people not to cross.

We have just moved from Sheffield and used Avante Removals following recommendations on Sheffield Forum. They were excellent.

We had issues with the moving date changing on a number of occasions however Thomas and his team were very flexible in helping us move. The team were very friendly, polite, and professional.

To cap it all the quote from Avante was the best we received and was far cheaper that the national removal companies we requested quotes from.

Overall I would not hesitate to recommend them for your removal. Their phone number is 0800 043 2810.
