Brian Laws is the new Sheffield Wednesday manager.

SHEFFIELD WEDNESDAY

The club have agreed terms with the Scunthorpe United boss and he was unveiled at Hillsborough today as the successor to Paul Sturrock.

Laws, 45, has been at Scunthorpe for almost 10 years and took them twice to promotion from League Two.

He had emerged as favourite ahead of Gary Megson after Bryan Robson dropped off the shortlist.

Laws took charge of Scunthorpe at Huddersfield on Saturday and his move to take over at Hillsborough was sealed in talks yesterday.

He went to Glanford Park this morning so that his staff and players would be first to hear the news that he would be leaving.

He regards it as a "great opportunity" and said he had had a wonderful time at Scunthorpe.

"I am now looking forward to what is a really big challenge at Sheffield Wednesday," he said.

Laws, who was player-manager at Grimsby when only 33, was a full back at Burnley, Huddersfield, Middlesbrough and Nottingham Forest, much of it in the top flight.

Latterly he played for Grimsby, Darlington and then made 18 appearances as a player after moving to Scunthorpe.

He had been manager since early 1997 although there was a brief break of a month when he lost the job but was then reinstated.

Laws becomes Wednesday's 22rd manager since the War and the seventh in eight years since the departure of Ron Atkinson in 1998.

Chairman Dave Allen met Laws for a second time last week and speculation grew late last week that he would be the man to move in at Hillsborough.

Why not keep the assistant manager on? He was doing really well. Maybe thats what we needed, someone with no baggage or ego who could get us results.

My sentiments also, same players who must have decided to 'play' for him rather than Sturrock who found himself with little support at Southampton, though Beattie counts for little in my estimation.

Laws can also upset players as he did at Grimsby:

[edit] The "Chicken" incident

On 10 February 1996, an incident after a 3-2 defeat away to Luton Town lead to the departure of Bonetti from Blundell Park. Just a month before Grimsby had beaten them 7-1 in the FA Cup third round. Apparently Brian Laws, angry after the defeat, threw a plate of chicken wings at Bonetti, who he felt did not try hard enough, leaving him with a fractured cheekbone.[2] At the time of the incident, Grimsby were doing well in the league, reaching as high as 2nd, but ended up finishing 17th.

At the end of the season Bonetti left for Tranmere on a free transfer, Laws lasted until November of the next season.

Brian Laws has a lot of respect over here in Scunthorpe, and he will be missed by our supporters. He comes over to S6 with our best wishes, and I really hope that success follows, both for the club, and for Brian personally. Scunthorpe are punching well above their weight, when you bear in mind that we're only a small club, with around 5000 average gate, and very little money knocking around.

The only thing that worries me is if some of our players now follow Brian down the M180, for example, Sharp and Keogh, mind you as ex Blade and Leeds respectively, they might not get a very warm welcome until they start sticking 40 goals a season in.
