pigeon
How sad that they are no longer with us. You are right they never seemed that old. More memories. The quite decent resteraunt near the entrance, with an Italian chef called Victor. Snowy, with the small band that did excellent Sinatra type stuff from a small balcony in the Cavendish room in the early years. Happy days your going back a few years aaaaaaaaarnt you??? remember the mucky duck?? black swan??
Elmambo
Penny Farthing was back of the Moor just below Furnival St junction - hope I've got that right. Remember going there quite often, it was very popular at the time. It was as it's name sugggests themed with images of pennny farthings, men in striped blazers, boaters, etc., bit like the tv series prisoner i have in mind. Dance floor with music, don't remember seeing any acts there. Doorman was a well known ex pro boxer Ronnie Crookes. I remember going to the Heartbeat as well around this time. Can any one think of other early clubs - plenty of other opened later, I mean the very early ones.
Elmambo
Aye going back a bit, when men were men and beer was tuppence a pint. The Black Swan it was called, nickname Mucky Duck. Manager was a chap called Terry Steeples, left some time late 70's/early 80's Had a well deserved reputation for booking and developing good bands. Seen some good live music there. Believe it was built on or near the site of an older Swan. There is another thread about this on the Forum, I expect some one will give us the link. Humperlumper
What is the Penny Farthing? Where? Penny Farthing was a discotheque (don't think they had bands on). It went on to become Penny's and then Isabellas. I think it's still a club now (maybe Utopia?) but i could be wrong. It was upstairs in the end of the block where fuel is located - the far end going away from town.
CHAIRBOY
I remember seeing Alan Price and The Animals at Baileys. I also seem to recall a Georgie Fame concert and as said earlier, Bob Monkhouse had been a star billing. I was a regular on Thursday evening's at The Penny Farthing where you had to have a card with a stamp in it - often long queues. It was very popular with footballers from both sides of town in attendance. Wasn't the DJ called Lance (something)? My favourite haunt was Nether Edge dances on Tues and Sats. I think it became Turn-Ups and/or Snooks, as the owner was Brian Snook and his father before him. It was a very relaxing and friendly place, rarely any bother, and you could go downstais and have a chicken breadroll and coffee and watch MOTD! Worthington E was 2/6d a pint in he mid 60's. Stenner
I used to frequent Baileys as a teenager and through my 20s. Took the wife there on our first date some 30 years ago, is that a good thing? must be, we are still happily married today. We also went there on our first date - way back in 67 - and yes, we are still together so it must have been a great place to start off. We tried to get in to see Long John Baldry, but it was full in the main room, so we got tickets for it for later in the week. We went loads of times, and sometimes into the casino attached/next door which no-one seems to have mentioned. Prior to meeting my husband, I used to frequent the Heartbeat about four nights a week!! How did I manage to work as well with all those late nights! Also remember the Mucky Duck (Black Swan) and Terry Steeples as his son used to go Denby Street nursery at the same time as mine and I used to go for a coffee sometimes with Terry's wife (can't recall her name now though). I went to the Duck for my hen night and got a free bottle of bubbly then went on to win the raffle (18 piece tea set and still got a couple of plates left!!) Ah, what memories
