You've got me there.I honestly can't remember Charlie Freemans on London Rd,I remember his shop at Eckington.Do you remember Alf Parkers on Spital Hill,Leather and Simpson on Infirmary Rd,Smiths on Infirmary Rd,Dysons on Middlewood Rd and Ma Claytons bike spares on Middlewood Rd.Theres something now nagging at the back of my mind about another shop on a corner just above Dan Bradbury's,I don't think it was there as long as the others,I wonder if that was charlie Freemans.

Yes ,the shop was on a corner just above Bradbury's,a friend of mine worked there and one weekend (when a teenager) i helped do some stock-taking to earn a few extra pounds,i fetched some bikes back from there to Eckington for Charlie a couple of times..Freeman's of Eckington has been demolished now for many years to make way for shops ........

Must be losing my memory, can't remember Frank Smiths but it was probably the shop Stan Cadwallender took over as he was more or less opposite Horriges.A bit later Armando opened up specialising in scooters,he was further down London Road,I think he was on John Street.Further up,off The Moor, was Wraggs on Wellington St (and later on Shalesmoor). Can't forget Greys on Bridge Street either, they tried to make their bikes look cheaper by pricing in guinneas.

I remember Frank Smith and Arthur Smith. I also remember Alf Parker, my dad used to help him out at weekends. He used to dabble in speedway a bit. My dad had a few combo's and used to garage them in some old stables near to Frank Smiths. He was always having petrol and batteries nicked. Biking was different in those days. It was biking, not posing and poncing around in the latest leathers. Nowt looks dafter than walking around in leathers with kneesliders and that funny 'hump' on the back. They look like Quasimodo.

Bikes were transport, not toys. I still fancy ES2's, B31's and the like................[dreaming again]. The older I get the better the bikes were.
