carsupplier
Trying to remember a Tigers rider by the name of Hagan or Hagon. When did he ride for Sheffield Tigers, anyone know?
CHAIRBOY
Hagon, he rode for Ipswich 'Witches' in the late 80's. http://www.hagon-shocks.co.uk/main1st.htm
Puffin4
The only speedway rider's name I remember is Tommy Allett? I don't recall ever seeing it spelled out. Did he ride for Sheffield Tars?
CHAIRBOY
Sheffield "Tigers"? Tommy, he certainly did and his son Guy carried on. I watched Guy in the 60's at Owlerton, very good. I rather think there is a younger Allott now on the scene, somewhere and maybe a current watcher can confirm? http://www.foes.info/teams01.html Tommy is pictured in the 1950's Edinburgh Monarchs photo. I see the promoter there was Frank Varey who was a big force at Owlerton in promoting speedway in Sheffield in the 60's. I don't suppose people of Frank's ilk got 'gongs' then but people like him were the mainstays of speedway as a sport.
Puffin4
Mm, a small hole in my pedantic outer shell. Who, or what were the Tars then? I seem to remember a surcoat badge of an ace of clubs.
CHAIRBOY
Belle Vue "Aces", Manchester? They were a National League team in the 60's - top League - and had the late Peter Craven (World Champion of 60's) in their side. Several "Aces" joined Sheffield at sometime. CHAIRBOY
Interesting pages but it now begs the question of what the relevance of "Tars" was? There was no sponsorship in those days so it wasn't a cigarette-backed team! Is it ONE club (team) who one minute is 'The Tigers', then becomes 'The Tars' and then reverts to 'The Tigers'? I had never heard of "The Tars", I apologise, but I'm happy to learn of that history.
Puffin4
Happy to be able to exercise my memory - must work on the short-term now! Mike
CHAIRBOY
http://www.sheffield-tigers.co.uk/ashfield20071950.html Len Williams, Jack Winstanley and Stuart Hickman were riders I saw live but by that time they had reverted to "Tigers" because I was 2yo in 1950.
