Finding history on my mums house

Recommended Posts

In Sheffield Library, I've seen a collection of books that recorded information about Sheffield - it's called something like The Sheffield Register.

I think there's a volume for each year (I don't know the range of years covered, but I looked at ones from around 1900-1920 - I think it goes as far as the 60s). In these volumes, it lists the occupiers of each house in each street for that year.

There's also the 1841-1901 (every 10 years) census online on various sites on the internet, though you have to pay for those. E.G. you can search for addresses on the 1901 census here:

Good Luck with your search!

Nickycheese I think you are thinking about the electoral registers; Volumes covering 1945 to (almost) now are on open shelves in the Local Studies Library in Surrey street. Before that, back to 1840ish, they are available on microfiche.

The other important source of information about addresses is Trade Directories which each have a street directory. The LSL has a series of these up to the 1970's. You can find directories for 1901, 1905 and 1911 for Sheffield (as well as some earlier ones) at http://www.historicaldirectories.org/.
