alchresearch
I find it quite hard to find places that don't allow smoking at all, which severely limits where I go out to, as I can't stand the smoke! I'm looking forward to increasing my social life In the last few days five people have told me that they're going to go out much more come July 1st. I hope we have a more pleasant, continental style of socialising in years to come, rather than sitting in a dingy smoky pub throwing as many pints down our neck in as short a time as possible. Banning smoking in pubs will certainly not stop any of this
Becky B
In the last few days five people have told me that they're going to go out much more come July 1st. How many places did you suggest to that they went totally non-smoking? That's the nub of the problem, customers didn't speak up and use market forces to get a decent solution to the issue. It would have been nice if non-smokers had the gumption to speak up and make venues realise they would do good business if they went non-smoking. Would have left the other venues to cater for those who wish to smoke. Instead, we've got a heavy-handed law coming in. True. But one always assumed they would never do it anyway, as so many people smoke in bars and pubs. I think quite a few people only smoke when they're drinking too. Squeak! sccsux
If the aim of non-smoking public places had been approached in a more sensible fashion, everyone could still be happy. Sensible approaches are not the forte of the government:(
John1954
Sensible approaches are not the forte of the government:( I believe this government to be the most radical and productive since Atlee's. It just seems trendy to knock it without any consideration of facts.
alchresearch
There was a two page spread in my local free paper today detailing all the pubs which have new outside smoking areas. Does this mean those of us who don't smoke and want to enjoy a drink outside in the beer garden will have to still put up with the stink of cigarettes? Rich
one thing that annoys me, most smokers say "this is removing our rights, our choice" well, its not, you can still have a ciggie, just outside.. we could argue that fact that if you smoke, you are removing our rights not to inhale your smoke, and smell the smell etc... it works both ways Even if they smoke outside though, is it not still on the pub's premises and therefore still classed as a public place? I don't really see how they could allow that?
