Sheila Richardson ARCM, formerly Windle, Nee Cook

Recommended Posts

It is with sadness that I must record the death of my mother, Sheila Richardson to all who will remember her as a pianist, organist or simply as a friend.

She grew up in Burngreave and studied music from the age of 3 under Miss Lilly Foxon, who had a studio in the Wilson Peck building. During the 1939/45 war, she broadcast short programmes from the Manchester studios of the BBC whilst keeping a home going in Richmond, where she also taught private pupils.

After the war she continued to have her pupils whilst also carrying out various musical functions for Sheffield Education Department.

To bring in a bit more cash, she took a position at Midhill Working Mens' Club after which she worked in various clubs and public houses playing both piano and organ, latterly she worked at The Marples in the 1960/70's and at Intake Sports Club. During all this she continued to work in Education, at many schools and at The Teacher Training College.

A couple of years ago, upon the death of her second husband, she moved to Killarmarsh to be near one of her sons and continued to play her beloved piano, subject to the limitations of arthritis, right up to her death at Bolsover Hospital on Friday 2nd March 2007, at the age of 92. She was known to all simply as Sheila.

Hi Nanrobbo,

Many thanks for your kind thoughts. We were in Sheffield yesterday for the funeral at City Road Crematorium and there was a good turn out.

Whilst we were in God's own city, we called in the Handsworth Asda and stocked up with Henderson's; a dozen bottles which should keep us going for a while. Its best before date is 2011 so it should keep.

Regards,

Mike
