timo
I am listening to a mixture of things as I write up research. These include Debussy's Nocturnes and La Mer, some Aphex Twin [on the recommendation of a fellow poster], Sibelius' austere 4th Symphony, and the new Kraftwerk 'live' album. This equates to a mixture of oceanic orchestral sweeps and electronic bleeps. Isn't it great to be alive?!

What Aphex Twin are you listening to? Windowlicker?
timo
Jon, The Aphex Twin cd is 'Classics', and the Kraftwerk one, 'Minimum, Maximum'. Both are very enjoyable, and good rhythmic, pulsing soundscapes suitable as backdrops to work. Often music is more effective if not subject to direct focus, and it can really seep into the brain this way. I'll be hearing the bleeps I only half noticed in my dreams tonight. Believe it or not, Miniminch got me 'into' Aphex Twin. I really ought to thank him for his kind recommendation.

timo
Panda, Yes, what a corker, eh?! I'm really glad they still do the really old stuff like 'Autobahn' and 'Radioactivity'. They sounded like nothing on earth when they were first released. I take your point re 'Numbers'! Nice to hear 'Neon Lights' sung [or rather intoned] in its original German. You rate it as one of the year's best albums-so do I, without a doubt. Regarding major influences upon electronic music, I would place Kraftwerk after composers like Stockhausen and Cage, and before Brian Eno and Can in terms of importance. Their music sounds as fresh and contemporary today as it did back in the seventies. Long may they stare impassively at us.
