Which won't do their careers a lot of good in the current climate of hysteria :)

Noticed this today too...

An interesting read but the article doesn't suggest that the surface ice on Greenland isn't melting though.

"While the retreat of the Greenland ice sheet can be linked to melting of the glaciers' surface, the same it not true of the four major glaciers in the Antarctic identified by Wingham and Shepherd."

It won't do their careers any good at all.

You're not allowed reasonable debate on this subject, its a case of If you dont belive this, you're wrong. Its a joke and thats why I think theres something very fishy going on... :suspect:

That's an overreaction to the outright denial in political circles and elsewhere that scientists have been facing in their attempts to get climate change taken seriously over the past 10-15 years. Climate scientists are touchy about being criticised and through facing an uncompromising stance of 'this can't be right' from many people have been forced into quite an aggressive stance / frame of mind.

Now though, this isn't doing them any good, particularly in terms of PR. I agree with the statement released by professors Hardaker and Collier - now that the subject is so firmly in the public eye, it's time to let the science sell itself!

Ok, haven't read any of the posts on this thread, but I've been thinking lately, that all the things that are supposed to contribute to global warming have all, in fact come from the earth.

Even if it's like plastics or petrol or electricity, methane gas or whatever, they have all come from the earth. OK man combines them to make other things but I have this feeling that the earth is able to cope, 'cos she a cleva motha.

theres the point. GW is what the planet does, we may be contributing but the planet does it. just like when the planets had enough it'll get rid of us. maybe thats whats happening

Tackling rapid climate change is not a matter of saving the planet. As you intuit, she's big enough and old enough to take care of herself.

It's a matter of trying to ameliorate the worst effects on humankind.

Plastics, petrol etc come from the earth, as sequestered carbon from prehistoric forests. It's when they are all released suddenly (in geological terms) that you can expect an upset.

As the earth heats up, the global weather system gains more and more energy. At some point, the energy in the system will exceed the forces (Coriolis effect, axial tilt of the earth, sunspots) that serve to keep the climate in a stable pattern (seasons, the tropics, doldrums, temperate zones etc).

When that happens, then we've crossed the rubicon and there really is no telling what will follow. But given that most animal and human life is dependent on the climate's cyclic nature, you can bet it won't be good.

I believe that the theory that GW is caused by fossil fuel use is as true as was the Millenium Bug scare of 1999.

Someone is making lots of capital out of this.

You have hit the nail on the head there; the media had us thinking planes were going to drop out of the sky, computers would crash, tills and credit cards would be useless and what happened, nothing. :D :D

Surley the big cause is the burning of fossil fuels, Carbon emmisions, Carbon monoxide etc.

Did you know that there is less pollution by driving a car to work everyday, a shortish distance for a YEAR, than there is flying a plane from England to spain- which is around 3 hours
