Greybeard
On a map I have dated 1905 the park was then just plain old farmer's fields No idea who they belonged to, but there was an old house on the top left hand side of Osgathorpe road called Osgathorpe Cottage which has outbuildings suggesting it may have been a farm. I believe it was demolished in the early 1970s. In 1905 there were just six houses on Earl Marshal road and non at all on that side of Barnsley road down to Cannon Hall. Greybeard
there was an old graveyard and a few fields with a big old house at the very top some say it was haunted!!!! All old houses are haunted aren't they ? I believe Osgathorpe Cottage was left empty for a few years so the council could allow it to decay enough to justify demolition, just like they did with Norwood Hall. Osgathorpe Cottage was a historic house dating from the late 1600s and some of the outbuildings may have been much older. Where was the old graveyard ? - it isn't shown on the ordnance Survey map. Some pictures of the old outbuildings http://www.picturesheffield.com/cgi-bin/picturesheffield.pl?_cgifunction=form&_layout=picturesheffield&keyval=sheff.refno=y02146 http://www.picturesheffield.com/cgi-bin/picturesheffield.pl?_cgifunction=form&_layout=picturesheffield&keyval=sheff.refno=s05801 and the house in its heyday http://www.picturesheffield.com/cgi-bin/picturesheffield.pl?_cgifunction=form&_layout=picturesheffield&keyval=sheff.refno=s05797 http://www.picturesheffield.com/cgi-bin/picturesheffield.pl?_cgifunction=form&_layout=picturesheffield&keyval=sheff.refno=s05798

Now you mention them I too seem to remember some allotments in that area, perhaps put in during the war and the 'dig for victory' capmaign ? Edit...some of the allotments can be seen in this picture http://www.picturesheffield.com/cgi-bin/picturesheffield.pl?_cgifunction=form&_layout=picturesheffield&keyval=sheff.refno=y02144

Edit...some of the allotments can be seen in this picture http://www.picturesheffield.com/cgi-bin/picturesheffield.pl?_cgifunction=form&_layout=picturesheffield&keyval=sheff.refno=y02144 The allotments started just below the entrance to Osgathorpe Cottage ,stretched as far as the bott; of Abbeyfieldand most of Earlmarshall, came out at just before the school , continued across the road and ended at Skinerthorpe, it was a thriving site in those days, and during the war years, : this was like this in 1933 when I first lived in that area.
