anyone remember HOWARDS cycle shop where crown carpets is now on Main street.Beighton wheelers used to meet outside on a sunday morning and go for a ride. just past howards was a row off terraced houses that were knocked down in the mid 60;s.on other side of road were the 2 pubs that are there now SPORTSMAN and BLUE BELL. BLUE BELL for the younger end and SPORTSMAN for older end. the SPORTSMAN was the 1st pub in hacky to have coloured tv We used to go in on a monday night to watch HIGH CHAPPERELL(cowboy) in colour. The BELL used to have groups on about 3nights a week. Some groups i remember are BLACK ABBOTTS/VANTANAS/WOLVES/DR.CROCK and the CRACKPOTS/FORTUNES and SEARCHERS.Just passed the bell was spencers farm and on the other side was STANIFORTHS WORKS.they made sythes and there were a lot of little mesters working where the cafe and hairdresses are.round the back was a pond(still there) where we used to climb over wall and look at the sythes. At the end of MAIN STREET were the vets is now used to be the village blacksmiths were you watch him shoe horses.Next door was a pub called NEW INN which had stables at the back.does anyone remember these!

It is, i grew up just down the road from there-Carr Forge Walk, my surname was Senior and i have very fond memories of Hackenthorpe.

I remember your family.

I lived on Rainbow Avenue in one of the houses with the triangular ‘green’ in front of them.

When I went back to Sheffield a few years ago, I just had to have a look at where I used to live.

I was surprised to see the flat green was now a lumpy with trees on it.

We girls from the Downend, Spotswood & Lunney families spent many happy hours doing handstands and cartwheels on that green.

I should have included the name O'Connor (Julie) along with the Downend, Spotswood & Lunney families.

Are you Julie O'Connor?

If so, I lived next door to you at number 12.

Just found this post. Bill Burdett and I were an item back in the 60's. I often wonder what happened to him and his family, Mum, Dad, Julie and Andrew. Perhaps if you see him again you could tell him. My name was Skinner then.

Hi,

I'm Bill's niece, Julie's daughter. My mum would love to get in touch with you Linda. Please PM me for her contact details.

Liz

Hello, i've just spent ages reading this forum, it's fascinating !! I was born on Cotleigh Avenue in 1957, my name was Marie Jackson, mum was Ivy (died in 1986) and Dad was Lawrence (Lol was his nickname - died in 1966) I have 2 brothers, Ira and Roger and had another brother Michael who died in 1959 when he was only 16. We lived opposite the Burdett family and the Dawson family and next door to the Wests. I have a photo of me and Andrew Burdett on a beach somewhere when i was about 6 !

When i was 9 we did an exchange and moved to Carr Forge Mount where i stayed until i went to work in Torquay when i was 16. I went to Birley Spa Juniors then to Thornbridge Grammar school. My brother Roger went to Carter Lodge and Ira to Thornbridge. My dad used to help out in the bookies office behind the Sportsman and my mum used to work behind the bar there, i remember going into the off-licence bit at the back and waiting for her to finish work, we used to get a small plastic bag with a pickled onion in, a triangle of cheese and 2 cream crackers !! I used to play with David Disney, PC Disneys son ?

My brother Ira married Linda Brownhill who lived on Occupation Lane and they now live in Birmingham, my brother Roger still lives in Halfway as far as i know, i havent heard from him for a long time.

I remember the Lees from Carr Forge and Mrs Varty, can't remember where she lived though, anyone help me out there ? I remember playing in Birley Spa Woods and catching sticklebacks with a net and a jam jar. I also remember walking to school from Cotleigh to Birley Spa when i was 5 ! Innocent times eh ?

Reading all this has brought back so many memories, especially Howards Bike shop, Elams newsagents, the co-op, the post office and Spencers farm, does anyone remember a button factory in the village ? I seem to remember collecting the bits of mother of pearl left behind ? I was christened at the Methodist Church which was demolished, i was 4 when i was christened so i remember walking up the aisle !

I remember Mrs. Varty, the mad old cat woman, very well spoken but us kids always thought she was a witch! Very eccentric but a heart of gold!! She lived in the end house of Carter Lodge Place, where it meets Carr Forge Road. She'd often invite kids in for pop and biscuits and to play with her hundreds of kittens.
