Chris M
Reading the Metro on the bus this morning. On page 19 is a review of a new CD - 'Dave Godin's Deep Soul Treasures Vol.4' Back in the late sixties I was an avid reader of Blues and Soul Magazine and I loved to read Dave's column - it brought a touch of class to the Soul scene. Does Dave still live in Sheffield ? He often had letters published in the Star and I know some years ago he was involved with the Anvil Cinema. Damon
He ran the Anvil Cinema I think - he was Sheffield City Council's Film Officer. I well remember his outspoken libertarian columns in various fanzines and free mags. And I believe it was him who coined the phrase 'Northern Soul' to distinguish the upbeat soul style favoured by northern DJs and clubbers on their visits to his shop in London. A fascinating chap all round.
Chris M
That's right - I went down to London one weekend to visit the shop - see Dave and take in Aretha Franklin at Hammersmith Odeon. Got to the shop and to my surprise it was closed -with a note on the door explaining that Dave had shut early to go 'Up North' to a dance venue !!! Aretha was superb so the journey was well worth it. Damon
Oh...... that's sad. Very sad. I know Dave's lifelong love was soul music and he had much to do with that scene, but for me he was the vision behind the Anvil cinema during the eighties. And that place helped introduce me to a great deal of world cinema I wouldn't otherwise have seen, and Sheffield would have been rather less interesting during those grey recession years. In fact, Sheffield generally would have been a duller place without him.
Trekker
Sad indeed. R.I.P.
Chris M
Sad news , Never met Dave but loved his column in the old Blues and Soul Magazine. He brought a touch of class to the Soul Scene. Went down to London in the seventies to buy some records from his shop and have a chat. But would you believe it there was a note pinned on the door saying that the shop had closed early to enable Dave to travel up to Blackpool. I was amazed when he turned up in Sheffield to engage in his other great passion - films. A guy worth listening to - whatever the subject.

Chris M
I would hope there is a tribute to Dave in the Telegraph on Friday. So far no mention in the Star ?? Yet the Guardian and Independent carry tributes. Cheers Chris
