Tooeg
I've just read an old post about the royal oak on Walkley Rd. It was a beer only pub with two rooms, one was actually a shop, where you could buy beer by the jug to take home. To the left, was a tap room, I'm not sure whether there was a bar in that room, or whether you carried it in from the beer off. The front door was on freedom rd. I'm sure its still there as a house. Blue Monday
I lived on Freedom Road and used to frequent the place in my youth. The beer pumps were actually in the shop, you had to shout through a hatch to get served. Been closed for about 30 years, and it is now a private residence. Tupotoffy
The Royal Oak was ran by my aunt and uncle George and Gladys Needham. Sadly Uncle George died in 1974 and my Aunt went to live on Freedom Road. It was a lovely pub, very cosy and the off sale shop sold everything. I even remember the meat slicer than sold cold meats by the quarter. It was a genuine 'public house' that as the name suggests, was a house that was open to the public. The rooms were small but everyone was welcome. theimposter
Does anyone know what year the Royal Oak shut? Mid 80s???
RedStrawberry
If the Royal Oak is at No 23 Freedom Road, does anyone know what happened to the houses between there and No 45 Freedom Road? I have found that a relative of mine lived at No 39 and then at No 41 in the 70's but they aren't there now??
