whisper
we used to nag mum for some old clothes whenever we heard the rag and bone man coming around just so we could have a balloon or pen or a little note pad.there were times when we missed out though cos mum would want some new pegs. i also remember the men that used to come round selling brushes etc
OneofThree
My mum would only let us get pegs. although we would have had balloons. Strangely, i can remember giving plenty of rags but never any bones.

Greybeard
Weren't they called Totters ? Pretty sure my mother always had pegs off them. Anyway there were five of us kids so a balloon would only have started a squabble Another horse and cart outfit I remember was the milkman, it was during and probably just after the war. He had two or three churns on the cart and measured the milk into a big jug we kept on the cellar-head. And the Tea Man had a horse and whatever...posher than a cart. I think the name was Twinings or Ringmans...could have been both. The knife and scissors man was a regular too but I think he had a contraption like a wheelbarrow. On second thoughts it was a kind of tricycle. The drive chain could be switched to a grindstone mounted on the back

My friend who lives in South Shields near Newcastle still buys tea from the Ringtons tea man and ginger biscuits!
