Who remembers the old Sheffield?

Recommended Posts

i was thinking today about sheffield over the years whats gone but still remembered. I remember the hole in the road in town with the fish tank inside and all the subways where i used to run through. The old peace gardens and in the summer with the flowers and the council building now replaced by hotel and big green house. and how sheffield was through my 30 years growing up. Dose anyone those times even though im 30 still young

i remember when there was tram stops in the middle of fitzalan square

I'd have to say the old Sheaf , Rag & Tag market, with all those characters loudly proclaiming their wares. Anyone remember the large shed in there where they sold all kinds of animals..dogs, cats, rabbits, even tortoises? Then there was Granelli's cafe housed in the market that served pint mugs of tea, dripping cakes, the usual working joe fare. When my brother and I were young kids, my aunt gave my grandad some money to take us to Davy's cafe, which was quite the place. My grandad, who worked at a fruit stall in the market, had no time for such niceties and took us to Granelli's instead. "Tha dunt want te go theer, dus tha?" What a laugh we all had afterwards.

Talking of old gone but not forgotten newspapers, there was the Sheffield Telegraph which became the Morning Telegraph, and a copy can still be seen on the paper rack outside Arkwrights shop in "Open All Hours".

Remember Hepworths the mens outfitters, Weaver to Wearer, the Fifty Shilling Tailors, a suit for £2.50!!!true, Jays the furnishers at Moorhead, when Kemsley House was home to Sheffield newspapers, and of course that good old Sheffield institution "Wiggys"tell'em -- somebody there are not many of us who did not have a Wigfalls bike at some time.I had the one with the brakes in crossed formation in the centre of the handlebars, and when I was called up for National Service an Uncle of mine bought it off me for thirty bob, and as he lived in Leamington Spa he came up to fetch it and took it back on the train.

All those lovely little specialist shops, don't get me started on them or we will be here until morning, all gone now, consigned to memory. The comments on these pages have re-awakened many of them, as the saying goes thanks for the memory

We still have a stride and ride duck that we bought for our daughters first christmas from Wiggies on Langsett rd.

It cost 15s 11p and is still going strong. My grand kids love it.

My daughter is nearly 39 so I would say it was good value for money.

This is all fascinating to a newcomer like me. One of the exPO's (Petty Officer's) I used to work with was from Sheffield. He joined the RN and then moved to Australia. He told me I would get quite a shock moving from Sydney Harbour to Sheffield. He was right, but not for the sae reasons. He left in the 70,s. From what I have read on here and seen, Sheffield is very different from what it used to be!

Do you have a name for this Ex Petty Officer ? I left the RN in 1974 and was going to emigrate to OZ to start off their new Naval Police Branch, but I somehow ended up working in Bahrain!!!
