Madeleine McCann allegedly abducted in Portugal (2) The press apologise.

The media are making themselves look absolutely ridiculous this morning. Most of the headlines are to the effect that "DNA samples that are "100 per cent match" found in parents' hire car and holiday villa."

This supposed leak by the Portugese police, first reported apparently by Sky News, has now been categorically denied by a senior Portugese police official who desctibed it as completely false.

...and Sky are still showing the strapline at 11.45.

One of the many problems with "instant news", I fear....

How many hire cars available in a large tourist destination like Portugal? Probably about fifty thousand?

So, fifty thousand to one, even assuming the abductor USED a hire car, which is in itself not very likely. Far safer to steal a car for the purpose, then torch it somewhere.

However, where we stayed in Spain this year, a small resort with one small car hire firm with about 8 cars, it would be possible.

I don't know this place but if it was similar to where we were it is highly likely.

The levels of evidence required here are higher than in the US, generally speaking.

A lie detector test can easily be passed by someone who does not get stressed by lying.

All they do is measure biological reactions to stress. Some people can learn to supress these, others may not believe they have done anything wrong and so will not register 'fail' indicators.

Similarly, the situation in which these tests are often run can be highly stressful, in which case very high baseline stress levels will make it very difficult to distinguished increased stress brought on by lying.

Also, failure may be brought about by lying about aspects of a case, not because of involvement but because of other things the individual may not want to get out. Such as in order to tell the truth about something they need to admit another offence, or own up to having an affair, or even something much more mundane which to that person is important enough to lie about.

There are good reasons why they are not used here.
