What happened to the reward fund by the way:huh:

According to reports the McCann's want to use it to pay their solicitors, barristers and extradition specialists.

What's the name of the detective (?) firm that they are employing to look for the girl?

There is an interesting field of study/investigation, based on the way in which an individual tells a story and the words they use.

The sorts of things you can look for are when language used suggests a gap in the story, inconsitencies in times, changes in language used, e.g. someone who bumped off their mum might write about thinks they did saying mum this and mum that. Once she has died, but at a point when this would be known to none but the murderer the language may often change to she this and she that, the murderer depersonalising the act by ceasing to refer to the victim as mum.

There are loads of different sorts of examples, which is why an expert needs to do it, its more based on experience than a set protocol, but would be really interesting (to me anyway!) if they were after a diary to look at that sort of thing.

Sorry to go on - back to the debate!!

That's really interesting stuff :)

So does that mean that the McCanns and co believe Madeleine is dead so they wont need the reward fund should someone spot her?

Or will the 'reward' be the £4.26 or whatever is left once they have used what they want?

Apparently no donated money will be used to pay for their legal fees. Story here.

However...

Esther McVey, a director of the Madeleine Fund, said the meeting is going ahead despite the couple's statement.

The fund's website says one of the objectives of the fund is to "provide support, including financial assistance, to Madeleine's family."

"What we are discussing is what does 'support' mean," Ms McVey explained. "This is the only thing on the agenda and this is a special meeting."

So would it be safe to assume that want to use the money if they are considering it?

Incidentally, I found the 'detective' firm that they employed - Strongwood who are based in Holland for some reason. They have spent their time following up reports from psychics and clairvoyants. Their Chief Executive is quoted in The Times as saying:

“We were asked to look at the case because some clairvoyants from America and the Netherlands were giving evidence to the Portuguese police and they were not following them up,” he said. “We are just doing it for the \ the expenses. We have been co-operating with the Portuguese and they have not said it is against the law.”

The clairvoyants don't seem to have come up with much for some reason. Perhaps the Portuguese policeman had a point...

Inspector Olegário Sousa, of the Polícia Judiciária, said: “The investigation in Portugal only can be done by police forces. As the collection of funds was done in a foreign country, only the police in Netherlands can pursue what is clearly a fraud. No private detectives had worked with us or with our British colleagues.”

I would imagine so, though it does seem staggeringly naive.

The very idea of this fund being used for anything other than to provide a reward for information leading to conviction - in the Crimestoppers sort of way - seems rather strange to me.

There's a case to be made: if the McCanns are innocent but have been charged, and face trial, they need to prove their innocence otherwise the search will stop with their conviction. Since the money is there to keep the search going, and the only way to keep the search going is to fight the charges, the fund will be serving its purpose.

I didn't say it was a good case. But it can be made.
