PopT
In the King Edward's School on Glossop Road there all the names of the fallen and those who served from the WW1 on wood panels near the main entrance. If you haven't already recorded these I'm sure if you gave the headmaster Mr Lewis a ring he would allow you to view them at a less busy time. Hope this helps. biker
hi all in tandem with the major undertaking of trying to record all sheffield born men and women who died in the great war, i am also recording and photographing all known ww1 war memorials in sheffield. i am looking for volunteers who are prepared to photograph and list the names on their local memorial and send them on to me. here are the type of memorial i am recording : public war memorials works rolls of honour school rolls of honour college rolls of honour church rolls of honour, you will also find individual memorial plaques in churches. i am also photographing all ww1 soldiers headstones in sheffield cemeterys, if you want to tackle a cemetery i can provide you with grave references to make your task easier. while you are in cemeterys you will also find inscriptions on family graves of men lost in the war, i am also recording these. i have already quite a few memorials etc in my data base but there are a lot more out there. if any one is interested in helping out i can provide details of churches etc where i know there is a memorial to record. i will also let you know which memorials i have already recorded. all contributions will be credited. many thanks in advance Dean My uncle who was killed in 1917 (I sent you a picture with some details) ,Thomas Wright of the 2/4 York and Lancs ,is commemorated on a plaque (with others) on the outside wall of a church on Carver Street near Division Street in the centre of Sheffield. hillsbro
I can photograph and list the Stannington war memorial if need be, next time I go (I am in the area about once a fortnight). There is a photo of the Stannington memorial on the site that PopT linked, but it's a fairly distant shot. Also there's no list of names as they are given on the memorial (my great-uncle was Charles Cecil Betts [known as Cecil] but he is shown as Cyril Betts on the memorial). walt
Hello Dean I have been trying to locate the WW1 memorial that used to be in St Thomas's Chuch Brightside on Holywell Road in Grimesthorpe. Not to be confused with St.Thomas's Wincobank. The building is now a Circus Training school and I suspect the memorial may have been relocated to St.Margarets Chuch on Jenkin Road, Brightside, when the two parishes merged. I should be grateful if anyone could confirm its whereabouts. I believe my great grandfather is named on it.
cat631
Hello Walt. I was told they had been taken to St Thomas's Wincobank but when I met Christine Crossey a while ago, she said they were at St. Margarets. I will go and have a look and hopefully take some photos.
