Ex Waltheof School pupils

Does anyone remember a row of shops on Main Road opposite Barnadiston Road. There was a shop on the corner selling sweets etc. I once tried practising Dynamo's magic trick of making chocolates disappear. Fortuitously (though I didn't think so at the time!) the owner discovered them in my pockets before I could leave the shop and threatened to call the police. I was about 9 or 10 years old. Needless to say I never ever tried that trick again!!!

Did anyone go to what we called the Play Centre at Whitby Road. It was probably a junior youth club where we played games such as, table tennis, pool etc

I have a funny story to tell about the launderette on Main Road. One my relations came over from overseas for a holiday. He didn't speak a word of English. One day he was walking past the launderette and saw a suit in the window with a £5 price on it. Well he thought it was a real bargain so went inside with a £5 note in his hand and gesticulated to the proprietor that he wanted the suit. Well after about 15 or so minutes of him 'haggling' he left the shop in a huff feeling angry that he'd missed out on a bargain.

Upon arrival at home he was asked why he was feeling so angry. He said he'd gone into a suit shop in Darnall to buy a suit that he liked but the owner wouldn't sell it to him. We told told him there was no suit shop there other than Seniors on Staniforth Road. He was adamant there was and said the proprietor was prejudiced for not selling it to him. It then dawned on us that he'd gone into the launderette, saw a suit in the window with £5 tag for dry cleaning!!!! We didn't laugh. Honest.....

Out there does anyone know of any of the old teachers from 1965 to 1970 that taught at Waltheof that still are around

There must be some

Some may even read these posts to see what we thought of them

Wonder if they want to contribute

Not that it's any of my business , I Think this is supposed to be a Waltheof thread ? There are specific " Darnall " related threads on this Forum , which a quick search will reveal , and may avoid confusion ?

Though at our age(s) probably not .

Opinion works both ways, probably best not knowing what the Teachers thought of us ?

Well some of comments from likes of Ben Holland ransom Shipley didn't leave much to the imagination

Today they would be in so much trouble

Many a time Ben Holland blackboard rubber narrowly missed me

I think that's why my hair is white today it's the bloody chalk dust

Can't believe I got no comments re the school brass band that played in assembly every Friday from 65 to 70

Thought my off key notes may have raised a few memories

The forum has opened my eyes as what I thought of some of the teachers was also felt and thought by others

Can't really say my years at Waltheof were the best times I had

The friends I had made up some way I guess and the stuff we got up to

I once got pushed through the wall outside Holland classroom by Andy Taylor

I went right into void backwards

It was only painted board as I remember but it caused a right stink

We both got done and had to pay for repairs

Sweetcheeks,

I was there from 67-72. I remember all these teachers. Also Miss Sarson, DW Smith, Mr Battersby, Miss Batty, Mr Rawlings, (they married each other) Who was the teacher that lived in Darnall on Darnall Main Rd right before it turned into Staniforth Rd? He hated black kids. He once got Linval Madden and used him like a battering ram and rammed his head into the wall in the classroom. putting a hole in it.

If I remember correctly It was Dennis Cooper !

I served my time there 65 to 71.

Here are some names that spring to mind.

Anyone still around?

Very sadly I can’t remember any girls’ names with enough confidence to add them to the list.

Any help out there willing to make additions?
