Power cut discussion thread... please save electricity during the crisis

Recommended Posts

Which university are you at? I'm working at Hallam and City campus is all fine but Collegiate is closed from 2:45 until 12:30 tomorrow dues to the hightened risk of power failure.

Why exactly are universities and even schools being closed because there is no power? It is June and light until 10pm so I can't see why electricity is necessary for most subjects, Or am I missing something?

The columns below show which postocdes will be 1st, 2nd and 3rd to go off to reduce load.

If you're in column 1 it does not mean that the power will go off, just that you're top of the list to go off.

its not just lighting alot of schools use computer projectors instead of what we had the good old fashioned black board.

my daughter is at collage and is studying ict so all they use are computers.

Post removed as I'm stupid!!

I'm slightly concerned though as my postcode is in 2 groups and comes top of the list to be off between 3pm and 9pm each night... After having no power for the last 48hrs I'm concerned that the hours I'm due to actually be at home I'll have no power :(

I live in S6 3xx so I'll use that as my example.

My understanding is that S6 3 has power supplied by at least 2 substations. One on Crookesmoore Road and one on Penistone Road. These substations are listed for potential power cuts at various times.

But, I don't know which of these 2 powerstations provides power for my flat so I'll assume it could be either. And judging by the table my power could potentially be cut at any hour of the day :(

Well they could NOT use projectors for a few days. This must be far better than doing nothing. Even for ICT there is no need to always have electricity, you simply can explain concepts on a baord.

OK this is probably a really stupid question, but if the electricity goes off, how does that effect gas?!

Our central heating is gas, but the timer/thermostat thingy I assume is run on electricity, so the central heating wouldn't come on anyway? Kinda defeats the point of having gas central heating really!

I assume the gas hob would still work fine.

I'm no expert but presume you could just turn the heating on and off as and when without using the thermostat? Like I say, I'm no expert!! Wish we had gas though as we've not been able to use ANYTHING for 48hrs now...
