Walks/bike rides with children

Apologies if this has already been asked - I have searched and couldn't find anything..

Does anyone know any good walks around this area (Sheffield/Derbyshire Peaks etc.) that can be done with children in a pushchair (thus having to be reasonable surfaces) or any flatish cycle rides with few cars that we could take the kids out on back of bikes?

Wondered if there was a book available that had such info in?

Any help gratefully appreciated... we desperately need to get fit and thought doing it with kids in tow would be a good way!

Great for pushchairs is Endcliffe Park, you can go right out into the countryside and at least one path is tarmac all the way. The lower park, near Hunters bar is ok for bikes but it's a bit more dangerous as you get out into the country. Any bus to Hunters Bar will get you to Endclife Park.

Riverlin is also good but the paths tend to get very "rugged" once you leave the main public part and head out into the wilds, but you can get a fair distance with a puchchair and a bit of lifting. Riverlin is not realy suitable for bikes, unless their the mountain variety. The Malin Bridge tram takes you almost to Riverlin.

Millhouses Park is flat and has good paths but is very dull (or I always though so when I was a kid) and very small.

I think Graves Park, Norfolk Park and High Hazels Park will be too hilly for what you want.

Drive out to Fairholmes which is at Derwent/Howden reservoir. At the visitor centre you can hire bikes out, tandems, tag a longs or bikes with child seats. There is a loop around the reservoirs which is approximately 11 miles, the roads are closed to traffic (apart from the odd mini bus or resident) and are flattish.

To get to the visitor centre head out of Sheffield on Manchester Road towards Snake Pass. When you reach Ladybower go through the traffic lights and over the concrete bridge then take the first right turn. The centre is about 2 or 3 miles further down this road.

Go out to Clumber \park near Worksop,Its national Trust so will cost you £3 or so for a car to get in or free if youre a member, But theres miles of walks that can be done with a pushchair, plus you can hire bikes with tag alongs. Its all pretty flat as well. lastly theres a coffee shop resturant as well. Take A57 to worksop & round its bypass, signposted off to the right

Thanks for the ideas!

Went to suss out Clumber Park yesterday but it poured down with rain so we will try again this afternoon! I like the 'try before you buy' idea of hiring the bikes so we can see whether we like it!

  • 4 weeks later...

Try the Monsal Trail - much is dead flat as a is a former railway line, no cars so v. safe for cycling, and surface suitable for push chairs.

Best places to join it are either Bakewell Station (for a short walk) or the car park next to the Country Bookshop (or something like that) which is off the roundabout on the Hassop / Bakewell road (B6001) where it meets the Ashford / Baslow road (A6020).

Was there a couple of weeks ago and there must have been nearly a hundred pheasants in the fields to the south of Bakewell.

Clumber Park is ace, we went there loads of times over the summer with our children - if you are planning on visiting a lot it is worth considering joining the National Trust so you can park for free.

We have only walked around a bit, but we might consider hiring bikes when the children are older.

It is fantastic isn't it! We went the other weekend and managed to get a good couple of hours in cycling before it rained. Not sure what age your children are but they hire bikes with childseats (ours are only 8months and 22months and they absolutely loved it! We tried first with a tagalong buggy but they just pulled each others hair and so the man in the hire shop let us swop it for childseats and gave us a small refund!).

We've now bought bikes and are just keeping our fingers crossed for good weather over the weekends!
