Kidorry
Greybeard, The 'scary' radio serial you used to listen to - could it have been "Journey Into Space"? I loved it (in a terrified sort of way.) Could have been "The man in black" with Valentine Dyall.

gregconn
Well done Hazel, there is some fabulous stuff in this thread, slowly making my way through it, perhaps we can start it up again. What about some food recipes from the past, my mother used to make a sensational Yorkshire Parkin but never left a recipe for it any solutions out there. Janner
Childhood in Shiregreen before WW2, we had snow in the winter, the summers were long & sunny, we played where ever we wanted, spent hours playing marbles on the grass verges on Shirehall Rd. Reading my weekly comics, Spot my pet dog, bonfire night. At the ripe old age of 79 & now living far from Sheffield, the memories are still strong. Barb M
Well done Hazel, there is some fabulous stuff in this thread, slowly making my way through it, perhaps we can start it up again. What about some food recipes from the past, my mother used to make a sensational Yorkshire Parkin but never left a recipe for it any solutions out there. My mother left me two recipes one for parkin & the other for toffee. Yorkshire Parkin 4 oz SR Flour, 4 oz Oatmeal, 4 oz Brown Sugar, 4 oz Golden Syrup, 2 oz Butter, 5 tablespoons Milk, 1 sml Egg beaten, 1 Teaspoon Ground Ginger. Mix together all dry ingredients , warm treacle, butter & milk in saucepan, & add to dry ingredients with beaten egg , bake in middle shelf of oven for 50/55 mins gas mark 3 or untill firm to touch. Toffee 3 oz Margerine ,5 tablespoons white sugar,4 tablespoons treacle,2 tablespoons of sweetened milk, 1 teaspoon vinegar. Put all together in a pan & boil untill a drop sets in saucer of cold water , approx half to three quarters of an hour. Pour into a greased tin & allow to set overnight. This toffee reminds me of Thorntons !! Enjoy !! Barbara
gregconn
Thanks Barb M, I will give your recipe for Parkin a tryand hope it brings back the taste I remember. Your mention of toffee also reminded me of the bonfire nights back in the 1950's, mom always supplied her homemade toffee
