What areas of Sheffield have you or your Ancestors lived in?

Recommended Posts

My Dad born 1914 lived in an area of Sheffield called Port Mahon. Don't think exists. Not sure what it was and how it came to have a Spanish (Majorca)name.

Port Mahon (pronounced locally as poo-ert mee-onn) as an area is at the bottom of Netherthorpe road, just on the right before the tram turns right toward Shalesmoor. It housed a lot of the Irish immigrants within ST Vincent's parish.

From Woodhouse for the last few generations - which could explain my uncle’s club foot. Before that ancestors came from North Lincolnshire, Buckinghamshire, and Derbyshire to work the pits - in the mid-late 1800s.

Before that they were pretty static, moving and marrying between nearby villages and mostly working the land (ag lab), making lace and mining.

My Nan lived at Firth Park which I guess is why we came to Sheffield when I was little.

Since then I've managed Darnall, Hyde Park, Firth Park, Manor, Gleadless Valley, Parson Cross, Walkley and Hillsborough. Not in Sheffield any more but not far away.

Hi My family were from Firth Park as well 76 to be precise, Olive Pearson ( my grand mother), Gertie her sister and Samuel and Annie my great grand parents. Just starting to dig about in this side of the family tree. Olive married Samuel Alonzo Cockshott and moved to Fulwood, Whiteley lane, they had Alan and Graham bith change dthe family name to Conway in 1957, if anyone has links please let me know.

Im living near to Norwich small World.

Sincerely

Sally

Hi Willybite. My Dad Stanley and his brothers Edwin & Bernard (Good Names Eh) lived with their widowed mother above her sweet shop. Think he went to school in Middlewood then Firth Park. My Mother's Mother lived on Forres Road (57) in Crookes from 1907 when her house was built to early 80s just before she died. Love to find out more about these places. We lived Stephen Hill Crosspool, Crookes, Bradway. Dad had shops in Firth Park and Gleadless. In later life my parents moved to Bakewell then amazing to Norwich.

Your father would possibly have been contemporary with my Grandfather, Harold Turner, he lived in the area round Summer street/ "the Canada". He was born in 1913/14.
