If you say early on in an interview (or to be honest at any stage in an interview) "I'm going to need time off at short notice" and you phrase it exactly that way you will almost never be given a job - they will just say to themselves "why would I want to employ this person" No employer expects you to live and breath the job 24 hours a day, but they do need to believe that you have a commitment to actually doing the job.
