Janner
The only monkey cage I can remember was in a pet shop in the old market .The entrance I think was a door onto the street, this memory is from 70 years ago, so I don't guarantee it. The Badger
Thank you. Woodhouse Grammar may well have a connection and it would be interesting to learn what it is, but it is not the one I am looking for.

Asaw
Was before my time but my parents said it was somewhere at the top of barrack hill near the Queens ground where couples met up. Think I remember a picture palace there?
The Badger
Thank you Me-and-Pippo for the link to Woodhouse Grammar. It seems that the monkey cage there was used for precisely the same reason as the one at Nether Edge Grammar (yes that's the one I was referring to). It was about 18" wide and was formed by the rear face of a schoolground air raid shelter on one side and a safety railing on the other. Inititiation ceremonies for new pupils were carried out, as at Woodhouse Grammar, but, for me, they could not have been too bad as I can't remember what was involved. It was also used sometimes as an escape route in the game of 'tiggy'. Perhaps there were 'monkey cages' at other institutions in the city.
Mags
I remember my Mother telling me about the Monkey Rack.Sounds similar. It was where courting couples met and it was somewhere around Hillsborough, must have been at least 90 years ago.
