End of the Lescar as we know it.

Current situation - The pub is being taken over by Castle breweries and the deal has already gone through. The refurb will take place Oct/Nov.

Duncan's job has been advertised within Mitchelle's and Butler's. This took place about 1 month before Duncan was told. Duncan now has to reapply for his job, and beat off any competition.

There is a petition in the pub to help Duncan keep his job, please all sign it.

Who are Castle Breweries? Is it the same firm as Castle Rock Brewery/Tynemill? They run the Barrack Tavern in Hillsborough. If so it may not be bad news for the Lescar, could just be a bit of a spruce-up and a better range of beers?

It would be scandalous if the Lescar was ruined. All that lovely wood, different rooms, its history etc. Trouble is there's no listing of pub interiors so there's nothing to stop them gutting it completely.

I used to go there quite regularly in the 90's with my brother and the odd friend or two, even though I live on the other side of town from it.I always used to enjoy the mix of different clientele, and the friendly nature of the place. When I first strted going in, it was run by a couple called George and Margaret, who retired not long after I started going in. We got to know them really well, and always had our "usual" spots at the bar. After them, Tim and Laura took over.Does anyone remember any of these people?. I even had my 21st birthday do in the back room. Great times, great atmosphere

Well it's my local, and there's something quite reassuring about having your bum pinched on the way in, buying a G&T with no straw, slipping on spilled beer, being sexually assaulted at the jukebox, and somehow ending up stinking of urine by the end of the night. That's what a pub should be!

In the meantime, we'd be open to suggestions. We need a room that holds round about 100 with sound and light in it.

The Highcliffe could do with livening up! Decent sized back room with stage, real ale and former venue for Mike Harding and Billy Connelly etc

I'm genuinely sorry about the majority of these completely unacceptable occurrences BUT

buying a G&T with no straw

It's exactly this sort of thing that rings the death knell for the local pub! It seems to me that outrage should be for the serving up of disgusting ale which has long turned to vinegar (Psalter Tavern) by staff who don't have a clue (one lass couldn't use a hand pump and required assistance) and not for the capital offence of not supplying straws with an alcoholic beverage

Assuming the Adelphi in Leeds they referred to in the Star article is the grand old victorian place by Tetley brewery, then it was refurbed slightly not long back but it wasn't ruined, barely altered in fact. Though there was some unnecessary painting over of a few old wood panels in one room to make it look more trendy and the odd halogen light added. It still feels the same. Certainly no sofas or ripping out of fixtures etc and it's still a great historic pub. The Lescar could do with a sensitive restoration, not gutting it thoughtlessly.

If however, the G&T had been served without ice and lime (or lemon), that would be a different matter. I'm not talking about the lescar (having never ordered a G&T in there), but why can't pubs get the basics like this right? Pubs need to do more than serve decent ale to survive

Anyway, before I go off on a tangent, Agent **** made the point that the people make the pub. In the lescar's case, that's both a good thing and a bad thing. If the change to the pub means leah doesn't have to endure the sort of hassle she experienced that'd be good. People who do those sorts of things should not be welcome.

On the other hand, a lot of the clientelle are sound people who go there because it's a relaxing pub where everybody knows your name, the staff are friendly and there's a fantastic pop quiz on the last monday of the month. If these people no longer felt welcome, that would be a great shame.

Email response from M&B--

Dear Mr Brown

Reference No. 233889

Thank you for your e-mail with reference to the proposed investment at

the Lescar.

I would like to assure you that we recognise and value the popularity

of the Lescar and its importance both to Sheffield's pub and comedy

culture, and to its regulars, who are rightly proud of its reputation and

tradition.

We don't intend to 'standardise' the interior in any way but will of

course ensure that it is clean, properly decorated and well cared for.

The proposed refurbishment will not change the individual character of

the pub but will focus on enhancing the amenity levels. Our investment

means we will carry out a full redecoration of the pub, including the

toilets, and an extension to the kitchen will allow us to provide a

better 'pub' food menu. Improvements to the garden area will make it a

more pleasant environment for any of our customers who wish to pop out

for a cigarette.

The enhanced drinks range will include a selection of real ales and

cider, plus a number of imported wheat beers and lagers on draught. A wide range of soft drinks including homemade juices will be available, plus a selection of old and new world wines and a wide selection of spirits.

The menu, which will be served all day, will offer traditional 'pub'

food i.e. burgers, sausage, mash and pies and a range of specials and

sharing dishes. Illy coffee will also be available.

Comedy and music will continue to be a core part of the offer.

I strongly believe that a well run pub should play an important role in

any community by providing somewhere for people to relax, unwind, and

socialise. The Lescar will continue to be a place that has something to

offer all members of the Hunter's Bar community and will maintain its

reputation as a friendly and welcoming public house.

Yours sincerely,

Nicky Pyle

Business Development Manager
