Albear
Those other cities have decent (or at least half decent) gay venues, thats why people go to them, the ones in Sheffield have always been cheap, half-hearted attempts to simply make money from the punters, you can't expect people to go somewhere just beacuse it's gay, they actually have to want to go there (unless you are SpiderPete who has some kind of mission to "support" anywhere gay regardless of how bad it is as long as he can get wasted on cheap lager). The club/pub actually has to be worth the effort of getting there, and nowhere in Sheffield is. Both FAB and Fuel proved this. WELL SAID !!! You're right of course but there is also the problem that even before venues are open in sheffield people have already slagged them to the ground and refuse to go. Based on this forum (and I realise that this doesn't encompass the whole gay scene in sheff) it seems that theres so much bitchyness, animosity and fragmentation of the scene that it'll never get together and support new venues
Chox
I suspect that the "bitchiness" you've perceived is the occasional noise of gay people who don't feel obliged to support a venue which wants to bill itself as "gay" but actually isn't. It's just a matter of self respect:D
nick2
It's more to do with different expectations and standards, anyone who doesn't think a "pie & pea" supper in Dempseys with amateur drag "cabaret" sounds a fabulous night out isn't a "bitch" or being "anti-gay" or "not supporting the scene" they just have higher standards and would perhaps prefer a cocktail night in Takapuna, a gallery opening, a night in a posh restaurant etc. instead. Carborundum
If you are into gallery opening dear and oging upmarket please come along and support Tyrannas Gay Art exhibition opening at Access space this coming friday evening 7.30pm. And by the way the Penny Change drag show at Dempseys was a fabulously great night out - shame it wasnt well supported by more gay Sheffield people ! I just think it will be tremendously difficult for any new gay venue to open and establish itself in the city which is a real shame
