I was speaking to someone recently who was under the impression that there have been quite a few deaths caused by air pistols (not rifles) I asked her what she meant by this and can she link me to any articles, which she couldn't.

I can't remember EVER hearing about somebody being killed by a legal air pistol (I'm sure at least ONE person will have at some point in history) and it highlighted to me that even rational & logic-minded people sometimes "believe the hype" or make unfounded assumptions.

I was reminded of Dungbeetle's correct post at the beginning of this thread:

Putting aside air rifles (which can be VERY lethal, I am a responsible owner of one), does anyone else think that air pistols are a common cause of death?

I too am a responsible air rifle owner and also own and have used a number of air pistols over the years. Dungbeetle was spot on. I have never heard of anyone dying having been shot with a legal air pistol.

I know personally of at least 3 people who are walking about with glass eyes thanks to them and Im sure that there have been instances of death in the past.

That's an air rifle, not a pistol. You could kill a person with a 12ft/lb air rifle at reasonably close range and hitting a handfull of spots, you can't with a legal air pistol, there is not enough power.

As thorough as ever with your research, that was an air RIFLE, not a pistol. Another example of what I said in my earlier post.

Well, the Scottish politicians are already steps ahead of you all. They have been considering legislation to have all air weapons banned! This is actually quite funny as the national rifle coach for the GB shooting team is based in Scotland, so it would be interesting if he needs to travel south of the border just to train lol.

The people most likely to be hurt from more stringent legislation are people like myself who have legitimate sporting interests which are the majority. For example, I am a 10m air rifle shooter which shoots at a club at county and national levels. The reason I decided to specialise in air rifle shooting is the fact that it is much cheaper than .22 smallbore shooting and easier to get into because of there being much less red tape. If you bring the legislation requirements for air weapons to be equivalent to that of smallbore weapons, then you are actually going "increase" the number of smallbore rifles out there because people will just migrate to that discipline instead if there is just as much hassle to get into either sport.

It just goes to show the people who have least understanding of the subject, shout the loudest.

Agreed. There is a lot of whining by people who have no idea about shooting.

im sorry but in my view in todays (almost a none gun) society theres no need for guns at all. apart from the obvious military, police etc (even including trained in the safe use of kids)
I taught my three boys how to use air rifles and pistols from early teenage. I'm a veteran myself, and the rules were firm. No pumped air in the gun,or CO2 cartridge if the gun was not in use. Shoot only at paper targets or plastic bottles in our own yard, and only when I was at home. One of them, Dave, served in Iraq and transitioned to an M-16 easily. You have to be responsible for the acts of your children at all times. It doesn't need a bloody government to do it.

Are you one of the 'pretend terrorists', creeping around in the woods, dressed in cammo, leaves and twigs stuck in netting ?? :hihi::hihi::hihi:

I see that sort creeping around in country parks ILLEGALLY shooting wildlife. I have some usefull equipment, a camera with a long lense and I photograph the shooters. I even photograph their vehicles [often parked close by] Its usefull for evidence. The shooters are worse than the vermin they claim to rid us of.

I find the shooters hilairious, perhaps every license applicant should be mentally examined................:loopy:
